CHAPTER SIXTEEN

Back at Oscar and Ana’s apartment, the door was opened by a woman around my age whom I didn’t recognize.

“Hi.” She held out a hand. “Tabby. I’m Oscar’s new PA.”

“He has a new PA? Huh. Nice to meet you. I’m—”

“Tiffany Black, and that’s Rosie McCann. I might have just started, but I know what I’m doing. Come in to the HQ.”

We followed Tabitha back into Oscar and Ana’s open-plan living-dining area with its magnificent views of the city. Oscar was standing by the window, and next to him was a large new whiteboard on wheels. It had several large names written on it and lines coming off them like a brainstorming cloud. One of the ‘names’ was simply POLICE, another was T.B. and another was… LINDSEY SYND.

Oscar turned around from gazing out the window and nodded for us to approach him.

He didn’t spend time on formalities. “What’s the news?”

“We’ve identified several suspects, and we’re looking into all of them. We followed a lead to another Latin dance show which is looking promising. We also have suspects at the Carnival Theater that we’re investigating.”

“But you’re making progress?”

“We are. Can I ask…” I nodded toward the whiteboard.

Oscar looked at it. And then pointed at each in turn, “The police, you, and trouble.”

“The Lindsey Syndicate? They’re causing trouble?”

Oscar gave a singular sharp nod. “They’re trying. But they don’t know who they’re messing with. I might have been away for a while, but I still know people, and I have considerable resources at my disposal.”

“Can I ask what kind of trouble they’re giving you, exactly?”

“Nothing for you to worry about. I’m taking care of them.”

“Right. But, well, they’ve got a bit of a grudge against me. They might be causing you trouble because of me.”

“I know. And yes, that’s it. Actually, it was you they were interested in. I’m handling it. Unless you really want to know?”

“I’m very pleased you’re handling it, Oscar, but they’ve been getting in my business a lot recently, and I need to know everything I can. For my own safety.”

Oscar slowly nodded. “So, they’ve actually threatened you, huh? Classy. Real classy. Look, here’s what happened. They sent some puffed-up penguin of a man—”

“Jenks.”

“That’s the one. First he said his company, Eclipse, wanted to take on the case. I said I already had a PI. He said he knew, and said I shouldn’t trust you, that his agency was far superior. I didn’t buy it. I looked into you before I first hired you, and I checked out some of the other firms around town. Eclipse wasn’t even on the radar. They’re so new they haven’t taken the plastic wrapping off yet.”

“It’s a rebrand. They were formerly Giant Investigations.”

“Ah, right. I wondered what happened to them. I told him to sling his hook, but then he tried to threaten me. Said he was just passing on a message.”

“Threatened you how?”

Oscar pointed his finger at me. “They have a large stake in the Carnival Theater property—not quite a majority, but they have a lot of influence.
